Although Shreyas Iyer could not lead his team to the maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title, Virender Sehwag is in all praise of the youngster’s captaincy. He stated that Iyer has proved that he was the right choice for the captain’s job even though Delhi Capitals had other options.
In a show in Cricbuzz, Virender Sehwag opined that he was impressed with Shreyas Iyer’s astute captaincy skills from making changes in bowling to fielding.
“No doubt, Shreyas Iyer has impressed me quite a lot as captain this season. He would make a lot of field and bowling changes which left me quite impressed,” Virender Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.
Earlier, when in 2018 Iyer was handed over the captaincy, Sehwag was not in favour of the decision. But seeing him leading the Delhi Capitals to maiden IPL 2020 grand-finale, former cricketer admits that the head coach Ricky Ponting has made the right judgment.
“When he was made the captain the first time, I thought why has he been made the captain, there were other players who could have been made the captain. But the decision made by Ricky Ponting to make him the captain proved to be the correct one,” he added.
Virender Sehwag mentions the impressive quality of Shreyas Iyer:
The quality of Shreyas Iyer which has impressed Virender Sehwag the most is his nature to gel easily with every team member. In the videos posted on social media by the franchise, Iyer has been spotted enjoying with all the players, which eventually made him an easygoing captain.
“Because there are some players who may not be capable of captaining a team – but they keep the team together and take them along, speak to everyone, gel well with everyone. In the videos uploaded on social media, Shreyas Iyer has been seen spending time with everyone. He is seen dancing with some players, and singing with others, and eating food with some others.
“He does not have this in mind that he is a captain and he has that position. He stays like a normal player along with everyone. And maybe this is why he has made the right decisions and he keeps getting useful advice from his teammates,” Sehwag further said.
Sehwag remarks that Shreyas Iyer’s tendency to mix up has made him approachable to players as they can confidently share their plans without any hesitation.
“Sometimes, when you are the captain, players hesitate to come to you. But when you make them comfortable, then they approach confidently that maybe we can do this instead of this,” Sehwag signed off.
Shreyas Iyer for the second consecutive time lead Delhi Capitals to playoffs, but this season, they had the golden chance to lift the cup. However, the end could not be in his favour as the strong opposition Mumbai Indians took away the trophy.
