Virender Sehwag Comes Up With An Out Of The Box Suggestion After Sri Lanka Wins Asia Cup 2022

Virender Sehwag, the former India batter came up with an out-of-the-box suggestion, saying it would be interesting if teams who lose against a side that hasn’t qualified, also end up losing their qualification for the World Cup.

Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka impressed one and all as the side went on to defeat Pakistan by 23 runs in the final to win the Asia Cup for the sixth time-just one behind India.

Virender Sehwag: It Would Be Interesting If A Team Loses To A Side That Hasn’t Qualified For T20I World Cup Also Loses Qualification

In the Asia Cup 2022 final, Sri Lanka was up against it at 58/5 batting first, but Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s unbeaten 71-run knock helped Sri Lanka post 170/6 in 20 overs, and then Pramod Madushan’s four-wicket haul bundled out Pakistan for 147 and as a result, Sri Lanka won the match by 23 runs.

Sri Lanka’s memorable campaign in the Asia Cup 2022 culminated with a trophy as they beat Pakistan in the final by 23 runs. In a country, which is going through economic turmoil, a win in a major sporting tournament will bring a lot of cheer and smiles as many cricketers reacted to Sri Lanka’s win.

It is important to note that Sri Lanka does not have a direct qualification for the upcoming T20 World Cup, and they need to play the qualifiers first in order to seal qualification for the group stage.

“Well played Sri Lanka, deserving champions of #AsiaCup. Imagine, they haven’t qualified for the T20 World Cup which is to be held next month. Wouldn’t it be interesting if you lose to a team that hasn’t qualified you too lose qualification. Tote ud jaate sab teams ke. #SLvsPAK,” tweeted Virender Sehwag.

No one gave Sri Lanka an iota of chance to even reach the final of Asia Cup 2022, let alone win the whole competition and their doubts naturally rose when the Dasun Shanaka-led side was shot out for 105 by Afghanistan in the tournament opener. However, since then it has been just a different team on the park.

Wanindu Hasaranga, Pramod Madushan And Bhanuka Rajapaksa Win The Asia Cup 2022 Title For Sri Lanka

Bhanuka Rajapaksa formed the backbone of the Sri Lankan innings, rescuing his side from 58 for 5 with an unbeaten 45-ball 71 that saw them post 170. It was followed by a spirited showing in the field as Sri Lanka outmatched Pakistan’s intensity, with Wanindu Hasaranga and Pramod Madushan taking seven wickets between them during a listless batting performance.

Wanindu Hasaranga showed once again why he is such a dangerous batter smashing 36 runs off just 21 balls. Rajapaksa rode his luck to score 71* off 45 ultimately helping SL reach 170.

As soon as Sri Lanka won the final, Twitter was flooded with congratulatory messages.

Sri Lanka, a country picking up pieces after the death of democracy while facing enormous financial turbulence, found 11 worthy heroes on a cricket pitch as Dasun Shanaka’s unheralded bunch crushed Pakistan by 23 runs to win their sixth Asia Cup title in Dubai on Sunday. It was a victory that was just not about cricket but way beyond that with much deeper historical and political importance.

Sri Lanka 170 for 6 (Rajapaksa 71*, Rauf 3-29) beat Pakistan 147 all out (Rizwan 55, Madushan 4-34, Hasaranga 3-27) by 23 runs
