The former West Indian all-rounder, Viv Richards has recently been voted as perhaps the greatest ODI player in the history of the game. Also, he is ahead of Indian Cricket legend, master blaster, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, in an online poll.
As a matter of fact, 29 of 50 jurors picked him as the best ODI player of all time. Recently Viv Richards won by a good margin in an exercise conducted by the magazine of ESPNcricinfo named ‘Cricket Monthly’.
Also, the little master and the holder of a sea of records in ODIs, Sachin Tendulkar managed to beat the former Pakistan Captain and an outstanding left arm pacer, Wasim Akram by a narrow margin.
Other two players who made the top five were the former wicket keeper batsman of Australia, Adam Gilchrist and the present Indian skipper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Vivian Richards dominated the One Day Cricket in the late 70s and 80s with his sheer intent of aggression in batting. And that helped his side to win two World Cups on a row in 1975 and in 1979 respectively.
But Tendulkar is the holder of a bunch of records in ODIs and statistically, Viv comes in no comparison to Sachin. Sachin wrote and rewrote plenty of records in his glorious international career of 24 years.
Sachin has played as many as 18426 runs in one day internationals and he has played in 463 matches. He scored the runs at an average of 44.83. Also, he has as many as 96 ODI half centuries by his name followed by 49 ODI centuries.
The editor-in-chief of ESPNcricinfo, Sambit Bal said that none does numbers better than them but even they are aware of the fact that numbers not always tell the full story and that is why they rely on cumulative wisdom of those who know for their awards.
He added that the World Cup was perhaps a good occasion to assemble the grand jury drawn from different eras and countries to pick the greatest ever one-day cricketer.
In total, 21 cricketers received the votes which comprised of five Indians, six Australians, two West Indians, four Pakistanis, two South Africans, a Sri Lankan and an Englishman.
The top XI of the dream team can be assembled as follows: Gilchrist, Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Richards, Jacques Kallis, Dhoni, Sanath Jayasuriya, Kapil Dev, Akram, Shane Warne and Joel Garner.
