Some cricket boffins and netizens have not appreciated Virat Kohli’s decision to leave the team in mid-way during the competitive Test series against Australia to attend the birth of his first child. They are of the view that national duty should have been the priority for the leader. However, former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman has stood in support of the current Indian skipper’s decision.

Cricketer-turned-commentator stated that Virat Kohli’s choice should be respected because family is also an important part of life.

“I believe you have to respect that. Yes, ultimately you are a professional cricketer but you are also a family man, and you also respect what is good for your family and what is good for your family. So, I believe we have to respect that decision. It is a very important phase of your life,” VVS Laxman told IANS.

VVS Laxman recalled that he had also decided to be with his wife during the birth of his daughter over Ranji Trophy matches. He added that everyone wants to experience the special feeling.

“I remember myself missing a couple of Ranji Trophy matches to be with my wife for the delivery of my daughter. It is a very important feeling, especially when you are going to get your first child,” VVS Laxman added.

Virat Kohli will be with the team until the first Test match, which will be played a day-night match in Adelaide. He has taken paternity leave for the last three Test matches which will be played in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane respectively.

Well, there is no doubt that in the absence of Kohli, India is likely to be in trouble in the batting department. He is a massive contributor so, his big shoes are going to be hard to fill. The onus will be on the likes of Rohit Sharma, Rahane, and Cheteshwar Pujara to guide the team while the fast bowlers will have to be at their best in Australian conditions.

Meanwhile, before the Test series, the two teams will play three ODIs and as many T20 Internationals.
