Picking an all time eleven team is never an easy task especially from a country like India which has time and again world class cricketers. However, former Australia skipper Michael Clarke has come up with a strong team while picking his All Time Indian Test XI. The legendary cricketer, while speaking on PlayersVoice, was sitting with India star Rohit Sharma as he picked his team.
The cricketer-turned-commentator made it clear that he would only pick the players he has seen playing. He started the team by picking out the openers, going for Sunil Gavaskar and Virender Sehwag.
“I have to start with Sunil Gavaskar. I think he is India’s all time best opening batsman,” said Clarke.“Partnering him will be Virender Sehwag, one of my favourite batsmen of all time, extremely aggressive.”
Gavaskar is one of the most decorated batsmen in the history of the game. He held the record for most runs and centuries in Tests when he announced his retirement from the game. Sehwag, on the other hand, is also one of the greatest openers in Test cricket. The former India opener is the first Indian to score a triple century in Tests.
Clarke picked Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar for the number three and four spots respectively.
“Rahul Dravid, the wall, will be at number three. So hard to get out. Number four, the great Sachin Tendulkar, speaks for himself,” he said.
Dravid is one of the handful of players to score over 10,000 runs in Tests while Tendulkar is the most decorated batsman in the history of the game. He is the leading run scorer and centurion in both Tests as well as ODIs.
Clarke picked current India skipper Virat Kohli for the number five before springing a huge surprise by going for Rohit Sharma at number six. While there is absolutely no denying that Rohit is one of the best Indian batsmen of all time, given his accomplishments in white-ball cricket, his Test record has left a lot to be desired.
Speaking about the decision, Clarke said:
“Rohit is as talented a player as I have seen through my career,” said Clarke before picking MS Dhoni as the wicketkeeper-batsman.
For the bowling lineup, Clarke picked Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan.
