We Will Retain MS Dhoni, He Will Play For CSK In IPL 2021: N Srinivasan
MS Dhoni may have lost his central contract and isn’t in the scheme of things to make a comeback now but looks like he will be playing IPL 2021 for Chennai Super Kings. N Srinivasan, the owner of the franchise, today announced that Dhoni will play next year’s IPL as well and CSK, unsurprisingly, will retain him.
Dhoni has been part of CSK right since the inception and has led the team in every season it has been part of the league. When CSK made their comeback in IPL 2018, he was the first-choice retention by the franchise.
“MS Dhoni will play this year. And next year he will be in the auction and he will be retained.”

With Srinivasan confirming Dhoni’s future with CSK, it can be expected that he might delay his retirement and might also make himself available for selection for 2021 T20 World Cup. Ravi Shastri, Team India’s head coach, has already said that Dhoni can make a comeback if he performs well in IPL 2020 and the same thing might be applicable for the next World Cup as well – there are two T20 World Cups to be played in the next two years.
A clear picture on Dhoni is expected to come out after IPL 2020, where he be making his comeback. He hasn’t played any form of competitive cricket since World Cup 2019. He took a break for West Indies tour and South Africa series and has made himself unavailable for selection since then.
Recently, Dhoni was also dropped from BCCI’s central contract list as he wasn’t qualified to be handed a contract – Dhoni hasn’t played for India for more than six months now.
His last competitive match came at World Cup 2019, where India lost to New Zealand in the semi-final. Dhoni isn’t a part of the T20I squad for the tour of New Zealand as well. In his absence, the team management has backed Rishabh Pant to do the job but he yet to fix his spot.
