What is Mankad?

Ever since Kings XI Punjab skipper Ravichandran Ashwin ‘Mankaded’ Jos Buttler in a group match against the Rajasthan Royals, there has been a huge uproar in the cricketing fraternity regarding the mode of the dismissal and most cricketing experts has come down hard at Ashwin calling it as a disgraceful act.

However, Ravichandran Ashwin in the post-match presentation defended himself by saying that it was a spontaneous decision as Jos Buttler had left his crease even before he had loaded his delivery stride. However, that wasn’t the case as replays clearly showed that Ashwin waited for Butter to get out of the crease and then whipped off the bails. ICC recently deemed this particular dismissal against the spirit of the game.

In the recent matches, Mumbai Indians all-rounder Krunal Pandya has also warned opposition batters standing at the non-strikers’ end. He refused to run out Mayank Agarwal even when he had left the crease even before Krunal was in his delivery stride. He tried to do the same with MS Dhoni yesterday but in vain as the former Indian skipper was well within the crease.

As per laws of the game, a bowler has the full authority to run him out at the non-strikers end if the batsmen leave the crease even before he delivers the ball. Over the years the bowlers have warned batters before running them out in the fashion.

What is Mankading

Whenever a bowler enters his delivery side, the batsmen standing at the non-striker’s end generally tends to back up. He makes an attempt to reach the other side of the crease whenever the batsman at the strikers end calls for a single. However, in his endeavour, a non-striker generally leaves the crease before the bowler has delivered the ball which is not allowed as per the laws of the game.

If a batsman leaves the popping crease before the bowler delivers the ball, then the bowlers have the right to run the batsmen out which is well in accordance with the laws of the game. If a bowler attempts a run out of that sort and he fails then the ball as per laws should be called a dead ball.

There are many cricket experts and former cricketers who feel that running out a batsman in that fashion is against the spirit of the game. However, many feel that the batsmen in accordance with the laws of the game should remain well within the crease when the bowler actually delivers the ball. They even feel that the bowlers are well within the regulations to run him out when it is in the laws of the game.

As per the previous laws of cricket, a bowler was requested to give a prior warning to the non-striker before running him out in that fashion. However, the laws have been modified and no prior warning is needed for a bowler to run a non-striker out. This mode of dismissal has always come under the scanner and has divided opinion in the cricketing fraternity.

Why the mode of dismissal is called Mankad

Vinoo Mankad

The dismissal is named ‘Mankad’ after the famous Indian cricketer Vinoo Mankad. He was one of the first bowlers to run out a batsman at the non-striker’s end. It was in the year 1947 during India’s tour of Australia when Vinoo Mankad ran out Bill Brown at the non-striker’s end. However, he had earlier warned Bill Brown before running him out. This is was not the first time Mankad dismissed Bill Brown in that fashion, having already done it in an earlier practice game against an Australian XI.

The Australian media came hard at Vinoo Mankad and accused him of unsporting behaviour. However, most of the Australian cricketers including Sir Don Bradman defended the actions by Mankad. In his autobiography, Bradman wrote that Mankad was well within his rights to run out Bill Brown and it cannot be against the spirit of the game as it is well within the laws of cricket.

Laws of Mankad

In the matches which have been played under cricketing laws, the bowler may attempt to run batsmen in the non-striker’s end if the batsmen leave the popping crease before the bowler has actually completed his delivery stride. As per laws, no warning is required before running out batsmen. If the fielding side appeals then the umpire has to rule the batsmen out as per Law 41.16.

As per the previous laws, the mode of dismissal was more restrictive to the bowlers. After 2011 the ICC playing conditions were changed and the rules on Mankading became more relaxed for the bowlers.

As per the previous playing conditions under Law 42.11. “The bowler is permitted, before releasing the ball and provided he has not completed his usual delivery swing, to attempt to run out the non-striker.” The umpires shall deem the bowler to have completed his delivery swing once his bowling arm passes the normal point of ball release.
