When Sachin Tendulkar was moved to tears by Virat Kohli

Sachin Tendulkar was simply an enigma in India and probably still is. People here are just crazy for him. A simple cover drive by the batting maestro lighted up a billion souls. More than the results of the team, it was Sachin’s sheer presence which was loved by Indians.

It was obvious that once he retired, the Indian fans were not be able to digest that feeling solely because of the emotional attachment they had with Tendulkar. The man who had been the pride of a nation for 24 long years was himself profusely emotional on the day of his retirement.

Once India trounced the West Indies on the third day of the Wankhede test, Tendulkar was seen with moist eyes. Tendulkar alone did not shed tears, but an entire nation wept as the master blaster bid adieu to the lovely game of cricket. It was not an easy situation for Tendulkar’s teammates as well. The person who had instilled positives within the young budding cricketers would no longer be a part of the Indian dressing room.

Soon after Tendulkar delivered his iconic speech after his last game, he was moved to tears by none other than Virat Kohli. The gesture made by Kohli was so emotionally moving that Tendulkar could not control his tears. This is what the little master said about that incident.

“As I was sitting by myself back in the dressing room, Virat (Kohli) walked up to me again. I could see tears in his eyes. He held out his hands and said his dad had given him these threads, the kind that Indians wear around their wrists for good luck, and he had always wondered who he would give them to. It had to be someone very special. Then he handed them to me before touching my feet as my younger brother. I was speechless. I held him tight and said, ‘Arre tu yeh kya kar raha hain? Tujhe yahan nahi, yahan hona chahiye.’ (What are you doing touching my feet? You should be giving me a hug.)”

“I couldn’t say another word because I felt choked with emotion. A lump had formed in my throat and finally I had to ask Virat to leave, knowing I would burst into tears if I tried to say anything else. It was a gesture I can never forget and I wished Virat all the success in his career.”

A couple of days later, Tendulkar hosted an exorbitant bash to celebrate his career. It was obvious that it was none other than Virat Kohli who celebrated the most and cherished every moment of it.
