When Skipper MS Dhoni Calmed Down His Tensed Teammates

The cricketers of Jharkhand cricket team found themselves in a tense and an uneasy situation when the ITC Welcome hotel in Dwarka caught fire. The players had woken up early and were scheduled to leave for Palam grounds to play the semi-final game against Bengal but were puzzled when they saw smoke emerging in their rooms. At first, they thought that it was due to some electrical issue but soon the situation became clear to them when coach and team manager informed team members regarding the fire via text message,

“We were just about to wake up when this happened. After huge smoke engulfed the room, we could hardly breathe. There was no electricity and the lobby was completely dark. That was really scary,” Ishan Kishan, former India Under 19 captain told Sportstar.

“We had an important match in the morning, so the players were a bit under pressure. But this sudden incident was so scary. For a moment, we thought that it would be impossible to get out of the room,” he added.

Jharkhand players though also co-ordinated among themselves as Pratyush Singh, who shifted his base from Delhi to Jharkhand before the start of the season also informed his teammates about the incident.

However, later skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni calmed everyone and sent a message to players,

“Even Mahi that was unable to come out of his room. We really did not know what to do. I have never seen such a thing before. Even as we came out of the rooms, we could not see anything. Everything was dark. We had to leave all our gears behind,” Ishan Kishan added.

As per, the reports, more than 500 people were staying at the hotel at the time of the incident.

After being evacuated safely, the players decided to go to the ground and regroup there. The Bengal team had already reached there and after having a discussion with both the teams, the match referee decided to shift the game to the next day as players of Jharkhand team were not in a condition to play. The game has now been shifted to March 18 and will be played at Feroz Shah Kotla.

As per the latest news, the Jharkhand team has been shifted to Hotel Lalit Barakhamba Road, Central Delhi.

The member of Tamil Nadu team was also staying in the same hotel and they have also been evacuated safely. They will be taking in the winner of the semi-final game on March 20 at Feroz Shah Kotla.
