Who should lead India in the World T20 Dhoni or Kohli ?

Pavan Suresh / 12 December 2015

With the World T20 World Cup to held in India from March 8 to April 3, it would be interesting to see who would lead India in the prestigious tournament. Dhoni is a captain who brought a lot of glories to the Indian team; winning the first T20 World Cup in 2007, taking the Indian team to the top of the test rankings and then having so many trophies in his cabinet.

Dhoni has three ICC trophies which include ICC World T20 in 2007, ICC World Cup 2011 in India and 2013 ICC Champions trophy in England. But for past one year, his captaincy has been on the decline, as he has taken many wrong decisions. In the recently concluded T20 series against South Africa, India were defeated 2-0 and the question were raised about his captaincy. India is grouped with New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia and a qualifier. Dhoni has led India in 49 T20 matches winning 27 and losing 20. His ability to remain calm in pressure situations makes him a special captain. In 2014, MS Dhoni led India to finals where they lost to Sri Lanka. Dhoni gives enough chances to the players whom he has a lot of trusts. In 2015 when India lost all matches prior to the World Cup everybody thought that India is not capable of reaching the knockout rounds but MS Dhoni and his team played excellent cricket to reach the semi-finals of the tournament. In 2015 MS Dhoni has not had a good year losing the series to Bangladesh and South Africa.

While Virat Kohli has only led in Test matches so far, his captaincy has been impressive. He also puts trust on the players and backs them up. Kohli still has to learn how to remain compose to tackle pressure situations. With the World T20 Cup 3 months away, Virat Kohli needs to perform well with the bat and contributes to the team success. Kohli has played under MS Dhoni captaincy. MS Dhoni retired from test cricket and gave the captaincy to Virat Kohli. Virat Kohli impressed in Sri Lanka with a series win after 22 years and beating the top-ranked Test side in the world by 3-0. Virat Kohli becomes more expressive and stares at the players when they do not field or bowl properly.

I think MS Dhoni will be a better choice than MS Dhoni because of the knowledge of captaincy in big tournaments. MS Dhoni plays exceptionally well when the team is in a crisis situation. It will be ideal for India to see MS Dhoni lead on his own home turf. The Indian team captain MS Dhoni showed the world how to handle pressure. The team combination he picks will be important.

MS Dhoni has the ability to raise the bar of the game when the situation is tough. With 3 tough teams in the group it is better to have MS Dhoni as a captain in the World T20 than Virat Kohli.
