Even before the start of World Cup 2019, there were doubts whether MS Dhoni will continue to play international cricket. After India crashed out of the tournament following a defeat at the hands of New Zealand in the semi-final, there are high chances that the former Indian captain will call it quits soon.

Whether Dhoni will continue to play international cricket or not will be clear soon – when the selectors name the squad for the series against West Indies – he might continue to play for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.

A top Chennai Super Kings official told Mumbai Mirror that their captain will play the next season of the T20 league. “Whatever may be the speculation, he will play for us next year,” the official told Mumbai Mirror.

After the final of IPL 2019, Dhoni was asked in the presentation ceremony whether he would be playing the next season of the league or not to which Dhoni had given a positive response.

Many veteran Indian cricketers have continued to play IPL even after retiring from international cricket and given Dhoni’s success rate and popularity, it should come as no surprise if he continues to play IPL even after retiring from international cricket.

Under him, CSK have qualified for the playoffs in all the 10 seasons they have played, also winning the title thrice. This year, CSK squandered a chance of winning the title as they lost to Mumbai Indians by just one run.

While there is still time for IPL 2020, the biggest question, for now, is whether MS Dhoni is retiring from international cricket. Indian skipper Virat Kohli was asked about the same after the semi-final and there was no clear answer to it.

However, given that there is a T20 World Cup next year, the selectors and team management will look to groom Rishabh Pant, who now seems to an established player in Test cricket.

He has been touted to be the future of Indian cricket and will need his time to set the tone in the limited-overs format.

The speculations over Dhoni’s future will be clear on July 18, when the selectors will name the squad for West Indies tour. Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah could be rested for the limited-overs series, which will mean that Rohit Sharma will once again lead the side.
