Jos Buttler has acknowledged that his future as England captain is out of his hands after their defeat against Sri Lanka in the World Cup. England’s chances of reaching the semi-finals were already fading, and the defeat against the Lankans further sent their campaign towards the exit.

The humiliating defeat left the defending champions eighth in the points table with a poor net run-rate. It came after the team suffered crushing defeats to Afghanistan, South Africa, and New Zealand. The team’s performance has been disappointing and has left Buttler questioning his ability to get the best out of players and lead the team in the right direction.

Speaking to the media after their heart-breaking loss against Sri Lanka, Jos Buttler has acknowledged that the ongoing ODI World Cup has been a challenging campaign for his team. Despite coming into the tournament with a lot of belief and confidence to challenge for the title, the team’s dismissal run in the tournament has raised questions about his role in the team.

“It certainly looks that way and that’s incredibly disappointing. It would need a few miracles, You get on the plane with high hopes and a lot of confidence and belief that we can challenge for the title, so to be sat here now with the three weeks we’ve had is a shock. It’s a shock to everyone”.

The England skipper said that he has confidence in his ability as a leader to captain his side and feels that his continuation as an England skipper should be decided by the people above him.

“I think you’re always questioning as captain how you can get the best out of players, how you can get the team moving in the right direction, I certainly have a lot of confidence and belief in myself as a leader and captain, and first and foremost as a player, but if you’re asking if I should still be captaining the team, that’s a question for the guys above me,” Jos Buttler said.

Jos Buttler is relatively new to the position, having taken over after Eoin Morgan retired last summer he has already won the T20 World Cup, and the England Cricket Board would look to back him going forward with an eye on the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

As A Leader, You Want To Lead Through Your Own Performance – Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler has recently expressed that the current tournament has not been going according to their plans. The team has failed to perform to their potential in the games. Buttler admitted that he hasn’t stepped up for the team with the bat throughout the tournament, failing to play an impactful knock.

“The tournament’s gone nowhere near the way we wanted it to…that much is obvious. As a leader, you want to lead through your own performance and I’ve not been able to do that,” Jos Buttler added.

With four games remaining, including table-toppers India and bitter rivals Australia, they are currently being kept off the bottom spot by the only associate nation at the competition – the Netherlands and the defending champions would be keen to put this past behind to come back stronger in the marquee event.
