India legend Yuvraj Singh has opined that the Indian team can try Rohit Sharma as the captain of the T20I side to manage Virat Kohli’s workload. He added that it is team management’s call to manage Kohli’s workload.
“Earlier there used to be just two formats — ODIs and Tests, so it was perfect to have one captain. Now there are three formats and if Virat is feeling overloaded, maybe they should try somebody else for the T20 format. Rohit has been a very successful captain,” he told ‘Aaj Tak’.
“I don’t really know. They (team management) have to decide how much workload Virat can take. Do they need to try somebody else for T20? It completely depends on how they want to go for the future. Virat has been the best batsman. How to manage his workload? It is completely team management’s call,” Yuvraj, who was a part of Mumbai Indians’ squad that won Indan Premier League this year, added.

Rohit has been deputy to Kohli in white-ball cricket since 2017 and has got number of chances to lead India in ODIs and T20Is. In fact, Rohit has a better record than Kohli in terms of win percentage in the shortest format.

In 27 T20Is under Kohli, India have won 16 and lost 10 contests while under Rohit, Men in Blue have won 12 out of 15 T20Is. Rohit has a winning percentage of 80, the second-best among top captains. Asghar Stanikzai, with 37 wins from 46 matches, has the best winning percentage of 80.43.
Talking of Kohli’s workload management, he has missed a number of T20I series over past one year but didn’t take a break from West Indies series, even when it was widely speculated that he might travel there only to play Tests.
It is highly unlikely that Kohli wil play the Bangladesh T20Is, which could see Rohit take charge of the team once again.
Voices have been raised to make Rohit full-time T20I captain, owing to his success in IPL – Mumbai Indians have won four IPL seasons under him.

The new selection committee that will take over soon will also have a major say in deciding whether team India needs a new T20I captain or not.

For now, Rohit continues to be deputy to Kohli in white-ball format. Under him, India won Nidahas Trophy in 2018 and also whitewashed world champions West Indies at home last year.
India will play oodles of T20Is over next one-year to prepare for T20 World Cup that takes place in Australia in October-November.
