Indian skipper Virat Kohli celebrated his 31st birthday yesterday. He received wishes from all around the world, with current and former cricketers also wishing the veteran cricketer. However, one of the wishes from a former cricketer raised many eyebrows. Yuvraj Singh, who was one of closest friends of Virat during his playing days, came up with a surprising wish.
“Yeh bhi din they ! Aur ek aaj ka din hai ! Jahan bhi ho khush raho , God bless you always ! Happy birthday @imVkohli,” he wrote on Twitter, hinting that everything is not good between the two cricketers.
It is to be noted that Yuvraj was dropped from the national team for failing the yo-yo test, which was made compulsory by Kohli and India head coach Ravi Shastri. The Indian skipper had himself revealed that it was during the tour of Sri Lanka in 2017, Shastri’s first assignment as full-time head coach, that India decided to make the fitness test compulsory for selection.
Yuvraj did clear the yo-yo test (in December) but had played just a couple of domestic matches before that, hence, he was not included in the team for the tour of South Africa. The India all-rounder retired from the game during World Cup 2019 and had revealed that he was offered a farewell match.
It is a fact that Kohli and the present team management surely have a strong say in team selection, which might have seen Yuvraj failing to make a comeback.
The 37-year-old played his last international match against West Indies when Men in Blue travelled to Caribbean Islands after the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. In Yuvraj’s absence, team India failed to find a suitable number 4 batsman for World Cup and the hunt is still on.
Yuvraj, who had made his comeback for the home series against England in 2017, had batted at number four in all the matches that he played in the year.
In total, the veteran cricketer played 304 ODIs, 40 Tests and 58 T20Is before drawing curtains on his international career.
