Zaheer Khan And Rahul Dravid Will Be Invaluable – Ravi Shastri

Newly-appointed Team India coach Ravi Shastri has insisted the addition of Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid in the backroom staff will be invaluable for the team.

The drama surrounding the head coach selection finally ended on Tuesday (July 11) with the BCCI revealing Shastri’s name as Anil Kumble’s replacement.

Shastri was initially not in the list of candidates but applied for the post when the board extended the deadline in the aftermath of Kumble’s unexpected resignation. And with him applying for the post, it became more or less clear that he would get the post especially after the way Kumble’s spell came to an end due to an alleged rift inside the dressing room.

With Shastri enjoying a good rapport with most of the Indian players, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) seemed to have kept that in mind, as they selected him ahead of experienced coaches like Tom Moody and Richard Pybus.

The board, nevertheless, sprung a big surprise by adding Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid in the backroom staff. While Zaheer has been appointed the bowling consultant, Dravid has been appointed the batting consultant for only overseas Test series. And while there are speculations that the appointment of Zaheer and Dravid have undermined Shastri’s position, the former team director does not think so.

“Zaheer Khan and Rahul Dravid will be invaluable in the team. I had spoken to both of them in 2014 to spend some time with the boys. Some fresh input coming in is always helpful,” Shastri told India Today.

Zaheer does not have any formal coaching experience but he has mentored youngsters during his international career and in the Indian Premier League where he leads Delhi Daredevils. On the other hand, Dravid, who recently resigned as Daredevils’ mentor, has been handed a two-year contract extension as the coach of India A and Under-19 side.

The new coaching staff’s first assignment will be the upcoming series in Sri Lanka, starting July 26.
