Arsenal and Manchester United have been looking to sign a reliable and injury free defender all through the summer as they are keen to make a key signing during the closing days of the transfer window.
Jose Mourinho is apparently ready to make the fifth signing of the summer as he looks to bring an experienced defender to Old Trafford after making four marquee signings earlier this summer.
Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger is forced to bring in new players as his central defense duo of Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista are suffering long-term injuries.
The Red Devils are keen to sign Portuguese defender Jose Fonte as ESPN sources earlier confirmed that there have informal talks for the player. However, signing the experienced defender from Southampton means a number of unwanted players in defense could leave either on loan or permanently in these last days of transfer window.
The most important thing is that Fonte has just missed eight games due to an injury in the last four years during his Southampton spell so far which makes him even more important signing to make for the clubs.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are apparently trying to finalize the deal for Shkodran Mustafi. The Gunners are keen to sign but Valencia are holding out for a higher price.
Valencia are currently under severe pressure to sell some of their players to avoid sanctions that could be imposed due to violation of Financial Fair Play regulations. Even Mustafi is a reliable and injury-free player as he had not missed many games for Valencia during his spell with the club.
Fonte and Mustafi would be great additions to Manchester United and Arsenal respectively. The Portuguese defender would bring much needed defensive leader for Jose Mourinho while Mustafi would excel under the leadership of Mertesacker and Koscielny over the next few years.
