Arsenal were bracing for a summer bid from Athletic Bilbao for their premier left-back Nacho Monreal, however, according to Mail, Monreal has made a u-turn and is now ready to sign a contract extension with Arsenal in coming weeks.
Gunners have seen Monreal establish himself in to the first team ahead of Kieron Gibbs and has made the position his own. Arsenal have recently agreed new contract from their young star Alex Iwobi and their next aim is to tie Monreal to a new deal at the earliest.
Marca are also convinced about Monreal signing a new deal in coming weeks to ensure a longer stay at the Emirates for the 29-year old left-back. Monreal was key to Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Manchester United and would look to help his team continue the momentum and build a string of results when team returns from the International Break.
Arsenal are currently ranked 2nd in the league and have players hitting top form at the right time. Monreal along with Alexis Sanchez are Arsene Wengeré vital cogs who take care of the attacking threat from the left-hand side. Sanchez and Monreal have a great understanding of playing together and that is another reason for Wenger to tie down the Spanish defender to a new deal, which is expected to be announced in coming 2 weeks’ time.
