Premier League giants Arsenal and Chelsea are reportedly ready to battle it out for Benfica’s 22-year-old defender Nelson Semedo.

The two London outfits have scouted the Portuguese right-back as apotential January transfer window target.

Semedo has only recently included into the Portuguese side’s first team, but has already earmarked by some of Europe’s top teams with his excellent performances having earned a regular starting spot in the Benfica team.

The promising right-back made his international debut with Portugal national team back in October, playing all 90 minutes in a 2-1 victory over Serbia, following an impressive breakthrough season with Benfica.
The 22-year-old defender has played only two games in Champions League this season, winning 50% of his tackles and 64% of his take-ons. That’s surely an amazing stat for a youngster.

Semedo’s excellent run has linked him already with a move to top European clubs. According to reports, Arsenal and Chelsea are very much interested to sign Semedo, but face a tough competition from Manchester City and Italian giants Inter Milan. Chelsea are said to be the favourites to sign the youngster.

The Blues have seen their right-back position becoming a problem this term with Branislav Ivanovic appears to be a shadow of the player he was last season, managed to win only 39% of his tackles in this campaign. Although, some youngsters in Chelsea back-line could be the answer for Mourinho.

The Portuguese manager however insists, he has faith in his defence, “I have complete trust in Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma, which is why in an important match for us on Tuesday I left Kurt out after the good performances he is having to show Gary that confidence,”

“They are ready. I am not saying Papy Djilobodji is ready because he did not have chances to play and his is a different situation, but Zouma and Cahill are both ready and if John doesn’t play, I go with them.”
On the other hand, Arsenal are not that desperate given the excellent rise of Hector Bellerin in 2015 but the Spaniard’s stunning form suggests that Mathieu Debuchy can look for a move away from Emirates. That means fight for the position could soon be required in Wenger’s team.

However, Arsenal would looks like a more attractive proposition if we look into their league position. Defending champions Chelsea is having devastating season in 2015/16, and currently sit in 14th position while the Gunners are just two points off the league summit.
