Arsenal fans may not worry this time as Willian is tipped to make a return to London. The winger is reportedly in talks with Fulham to make a comeback to the Premier League, according to GOAL. He left Arsenal last summer after a torrid period at the club following his move from Chelsea.
He returned to his homeland Brazil, with Corinthians on a free transfer after contract termination with the Gunners. Willian, who was indeed a product of Corinthians youth setup has however failed to settle in at the club in his second stint with them. He contributed just 1 goal and 4 assists in 36 games for his boyhood club and is now expected to join the Cottagers in their new Premier League campaign.
Willian and family concerned by ‘social media incidents’ from the fans
Willian left for Corinthians last year, after a disappointing 12 months at Arsenal which saw him score 1 goal and collect 7 assists in 37 games. He was subject to too much criticism and abuse at the hands of the Gunners’ fans who accused him of not living up to the club’s expectations. However, he has found no solace at Corinthians as well, after the club’s fans recently hit out at him.
According to GOAL, Willian and his family were ‘bothered by the social media incident from fans’ following Corinthians’ exit from the Copa Libertadores. Willian’s side got ousted by rivals Flamengo 3-0 on aggregate in the quarter-finals of the competition.
Willian and Corinthians reportedly worked rapidly to terminate his contract following the defeat. The 34-year-old still had a year left on his contract before the mutual termination. This results in Willian’s second contract termination with his employers within a space of 12 months.
The winger is now looking to make a comeback to England, with newly promoted side Fulham ready to snap him up. Willian boasts a massive Premier League experience, featuring in 258 games across stints at Arsenal and Chelsea. A two-time champion as well with Chelsea, the Brazilian has 36 goals and 44 assists to his name in those 258 games.
Fulham manager Marco Silva is all set to welcome Willian at Craven Cottage given the experience he will bring along with him. Silva has already enjoyed a decent start to the Premier League with Fulham drawing 2-2 in their opener against Liverpool. While Willian failed to deliver his last season in the Premier League, he is worth a gamble for Fulham who could can count on his experience.
