Arsenal have been determined in their Moises Caicedo pursuit despite Brighton being adamant that the player is nowhere to go this month. The Seagulls insist that Caicedo finish the season at Amex Stadium, and then move on to a ‘big club’, with the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool interested as well. So much so that the coastal club even rejected two of Arsenal’s bids of £60m and £70m out of hand.
Caicedo too didn’t hold back in putting efforts from his side, directly releasing a statement on social media requesting Brighton to grant his transfer wish. However, instead of reacting to it by green lighting a potential sale, Brighton are fuming with the midfielder, ordering him to ‘stay away from the cub’ until the transfer window shuts, according to multiple reports.
De Zerbi hints club could sell Moises Caicedo in the last hours
Moises Caicedo stirred the last days of the January transfer market into frenzy after Arsenal dropped a bombshell by bidding £60m for him. With both the midfielder and the Gunners hopeful of reaching an agreement, Brighton took an unexpected stance as they blocked a move. Arsenal even returned with an improved £70m offer, which again was rebuffed by the Seagulls in minutes.
The Ecuadorian was also asked to keep away from the team and not attend training ahead of their Liverpool showdown in the FA Cup fourth round. Brighton won the tie in the most famous fashion, with Kaoru Mitoma scoring the winner in the last minute of the stoppage time. However, Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi was still flocked with questions about the missing Moises Caicedo, as he told the reporters:
“[Moises] Caicedo is a very, very good guy. I can understand him because when you are 21, and you receive the request of a big, big team that are playing in Europe, I can understand. I would like that he can finish the season with us but we are ready to go forward without him.
“I think we need some players in some positions. I spoke a lot of time with Tony [Bloom] he knows very well my opinion because we are a good team but we can improve also from the transfer market. We lost Trossard, if we lose also Caicedo it can be a problem for us. If we want to fight for Europe, or the maximum on the table. If we want to stay like this [at our current level], we can. But I don’t like.
“I was surprised [by Caicedo’s social media post]. But I can understand where it started. I don’t know if you understand, but Moises is a good guy. I think if we don’t lose Caicedo, we are ready to fight. I’m not angry (scared) to say my team can fight for Europe. The most important is the way, the improvement. In transfer market window, always you have the possibility to improve.”
With the ex-Shakhtar Donetsk manager ready to finish the season without Moises Caicedo, this could potentially be a boost for Arsenal who are not ready give up on the deal. The Gunners have found themselves in an unprecedented title race, and manager Mikel Arteta knows only new reinforcements this month would sustain their title charge. Trossard has been their only buy in this window, however the priority being a midfielder.
