Chelsea and England legend, Ashley Cole has confirmed his move to the West Coast club, Los Angeles Galaxy as he approached the window as a free agent. He had earlier terminated the contract he had signed at AS Roma on the July of 2014 to facilitate the move. Being visibly frustrated at being left out of the squad, he could be seen sulking around during the training or matches apart from the 16 appearances he did manage to make at the club.
With such disappointing results from a season and a half at the club, he is definitely a risky proposition for a club that hopes to win the Major League Soccer title the next season.
“Whether you think it’s a risk or a gamble, these are the risks and gambles that you take,” said Arena.
Cole has been capped 107 times for England and has won 4 league titles and 7 FA Cups, which is a record for any single player in the history of the tournament. He also has the honour of having medals from both the European tournaments in his cabinet, including the one and only Champions League win for Chelsea.
“Ashley Cole has a great history,” added Arena.
“We know that doesn’t necessarily translate on the field when you come to Major League Soccer, but my interactions over the last couple of months show me he’s a player that has a strong desire to play here in Los Angeles.
“He’s very fit and has a burning desire to get back on the field and prove to people he can still play.
“I have a hard time believing he won’t be one of the better left-backs in our league.”
This move will certainly have tempered expectations considering how distinctly average Steven Gerrard has been for the club but will definitely be a popular one amongst the fans who might admire the presence of the greatest left back of his time and perhaps, even, ever.
