Despite having crashed out from second ISL with a defeat against Chennaiyin FC in their second semifinal at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday evening, Atletico De Kolkata (ATK) team management is planning to retain its Spanish coach Antonio Lopez Habas. Although the final decision will be taken by the Spanish coach after a couple of months, ATK owners are satisfied with the ultimate result of the team given by the coach where ATK has earned one win and a semifinal place in the two ISLs in last two years.
Chief owner of ATK Sanjiv Goenka said after the match on Wednesday, “There are a lot of problems with Mr Habas. Even a section of the players in the team do not like him. But ultimately team’s performance matters to us. In last two Indian Super League tournaments we have achieved one title and a semifinal place. So, going by the result we should think of retaining Habas in the next season also. But at the same time, we will have to look into his financial demands as well as other demands also.”
Along with the Spanish coach, ATK management is also planning to renew contract with a few of their foreign players like Samie Doutie and Gavilan Fernandez. South African attacking midfielder, Doutie has already impressed in his maiden ISL while Gavilan has also delivered respectable show in his first ISL. More importantly, ATK bosses want to ensure its marquee footballer in the next season. And so far their plan is to identify Ian Hume as the team’s marquee footballer as the team management already had a bitter experience with marquee footballers in the opening and this time. Habas had severe conflict with Luis Garcia in the last season as well as with Elder Poschiga this season.
