Man Utd 1-0 Tottenham, Kyle Walker OWN goal gifts LVG 3 points on Birthday

An unfortunate own goal from Tottenham Hotspur, right-back Kyle Walker helped Manchester United seal a 1-0 win in the opening match of the 2015/16 Premier League season. The goal came in the 22nd minute when Wayne Rooney recieved a pass from Ashley Young inside the penalty box. Before the English international could gather the ball properly Walker came from behind and tried to clear the ball, but his sloppy touch pushed the ball inside the net.

Manchester United left out David De Gea out of the 18 man squad. New recruit Argentine international Sergio Romero started as the first choice custodian. Total 4 out of United’s 5 signings started in the first XI. Bastain Schweinsteiger was left out on the bench.

United looked uncomfortable from the very beginning of the match. Tottenham attacked more. The combination of Harry Kane Christian Eriksen upfront imposed constant threat on the United defense. Daley Blind and Chris Smalling looked extremely shaky.

Spurs could have taken the lead in the very beginning. Kane provided a fantastic pass to Eriksen who did well to control the ball with his head. He was one on one with Romero abd lobbed the ball over him. Unfortunately the ball went above the post.

Finally, against the run of play United counter-attacked and Ashley Young assisted a ball to Wayne Rooney. The club captain fumbled with the ball as Kyle Walker came from behind with the intention to clear. His poor touch pushed the ball inside the net.

United gained confidense from the surprise goal they got and started attacking in numbers. Memphis Depay looked bright in his debut match. Juan Mata came close to score in the dying moments of the first half but it was blocked somehow. Depay too attempted a few shots at the goal but they were blocked.


United’s star signing Bastian Schweinsteiger was fielded in the second half who replaced Michael Carrick in the central midfield position. Mauricio Pochettino too made a change bringing in Ryan Mason in place Nabil Bentaleb.

Tottenham attakced in numbers for almost the entire second half as they seemed desperate for an equaliser. Sergio Romero was the busiest player on the pitch in United outfit in the second half as he had to make a series of saves to keep his team at bay.

Spurs came close to score on number of occassions but some valiant goalkeeping by Romero and desperate defending by the United defenders kept the score sheet unchanged.

Manchester United successfully defended their lucky which was scored early in the first half to register three crucial points at their home ground. The United team never looked composed as the new players are yet to adjust to the conditions. Matteo Darmian and Memphis Depay looked good today.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team on the other hand can draw a lot of positives from this match. Irrespective of losing the tie Spurs were definitely the better team on the pitch today as they dominated almost the enitre match.
