Nigerian youngster Kelechi Nwakali is reportedly on the brink of joining Arsenal – and could even complete his move today.
The 18-year-old midfielder is on the Gunners’ radar and boarded a plane last night to fly into the UK to secure his deal, claim reports in Nigeria.
Nwakali is apparently set to sign a five-year contract at the Emirates after helping his country win the Under-17 World Cup in Chile last year, being crowned player of the tournament in the process.
Work permit issues had threatened to scupper the move, but they now seem to have been overcome.
It was also reported that Nwakali’s move to North London was delayed by his participation in the under-20 African Cup of Nation qualifiers which have now concluded after Nigeria failed to secure their place at the tournament.
The young star has reportedly already signed a five-year-deal with the club, however, is yet to be officially announced as an Arsenal player.
Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger still wants to buy both a forward and a defender in the transfer window, but expects a tough “poker game” with other clubs over targeted signings.
Wenger had set his sights on three new signings when the summer started but has so far only brought in midfielder Granit Xhaka along with two young prospects – defender Rob Holding from Bolton and Japan forward Takuma Asano.
But having already pledged to spend big money if the right player becomes available, Wenger also made it clear that he wants to strengthen both the attack and back four before the window closes.
