Versatile defender Joe Gomez has committed his future to Liverpool by signing a five-year deal with the Reds.
Gomez, , who remained on the sidelines for over a year after suffering ACL and Achilles injuries, has returned to action and played in both fixtures of the FA Cup third-round tie with Plymouth Argyle.
The 19-year old, who arrived at Anfield in 2015 for £3.5 million from Charlton Athletic, had played only seven games for Liverpool before playing in the FA Cup clash earlier this month but Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is already convinced with his potentials and has reportedly turned down several loan offers from other clubs before tying down the highly-rated defender.
Expressing his delight over signing the long-term deal, an elated Gomez, while speaking to Liverpool’s website, said:“It was a very easy decision. It is a great club and when it was mentioned about me extending my time here, it’s not something I had to think very long about. I’m very happy it’s done now and I’ll just look to push on.
Now fully fit, Gomez would be hoping to feature regularly in the backline which has faced severe criticism for its inconsistent displays.
“It’s massive. It means a lot to me – it’s a massive gesture from the club to show that trust and faith in me. That’s why it was so important I did the same and done it so quick because I’m very happy here. I’ve loved living here and playing here and learning under the new manager, so it was a quick decision,”
“I feel good, very good. I’m back training normally and have been for a good while now. Obviously, it was nice to get some minutes in the last two FA Cup games,” he added.
“Now it’s about me trying to push on and keep learning – learning from the team. I’ve got good role models in front of me: Dejan, Joel, Ragnar, Lucas and so on. It’s a great environment for me to be in and I’m just trying to learn each day from them, as well as trying to push and challenge them at the same time. It’s good and I feel good,” he concluded.
Gomez is the second player to sign a new deal this week after the Merseyside outfit tied down their star playmaker Philippe Coutinho with a lucrative five-year contract.Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren are also in line to get new deals.
