The quarterfinals of the Capital One Cup took place on Tuesday and Wednesday night and it was a chance for 4 teams to progress into the two legged semi-finals and inch themselves closer to a final at Wembley.

The tie of the round was the all Premier League clash between Tottenham and Newcastle, while Liverpool had a tough away trip to Championship high fliers, Bournemouth. Derby played host to Chelsea while the final game was between Sheffield United and Southampton, here are the results from the quarterfinals.

Sheffield United 1-0 Southampton

The high flying Saints were brought crashing down to earth with their 5th loss in a row as they lost to third division club Sheffield United. This was Sheffield United’s first appearance in the League Cup semi-final since 2002-03.

Sheffield scored through Mark McNulty in the 63rd minute while they had chances to score earlier through Louis Reed and Jamal Campbell-Ryce. Southampton got Florin Gardos sent off late in the game to compound their misery.

Derby County 1-3 Chelsea

Chelsea continued their surge for a quadruple this season after beating the Championship side 3-1. Eden Hazard opened the scoring for Chelsea before Felipe Luis scored his first goal for Chelsea with a beautiful free kick.

There was some hope when Bryson scored for Derby to make it 1-2 but Schurrle scored in the 82nd minute to seal the win for Chelsea.

Bournemouth 1-3 Liverpool

Liverpool also progressed into the next round with a much better performance than normal against Bournemouth. Raheem Sterling opened the scoring in the 20th minute before Lazar Markovic made it two for the Reds in the 27th minute before Sterling scored again to make it 3-0.

Bournemouth scored through Gosling and could have scored more but Liverpool held on to hand Bournemouth their first loss in 13 games.

Tottenham Hotspurs 4-0 Newcastle United

Tottenham were ruthless as they defeated a depleted Newcastle side that had to continue in goal with Ainwick. Nabil Bentaleb opened the scoring for Spurs in the 18th minute. They made it 2-0 just after 36 seconds in the second half thanks to Nacer Chadli.

On form striker Harry Kane made it 3 before Roberto Soldado made it 4 to complete a rout for Spurs as they booked their place in the next round.
