Carlo Ancelotti Threatened Real Madrid Against A Potential Cristiano Ronaldo Return This Summer

Cristiano Ronaldo’s stay at Manchester United has gone from bad to worse as the forward was dropped from the squad for the Red Devils’ Chelsea showdown, after his antics during the Spurs win. The 37-year-old was searching for a new club all summer long, after United failed to clinch a Champions League berth as a result of their sixth place finish in the league. Many clubs including Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and his former team Real Madrid were interested in bringing in Ronaldo.

However, Spanish media El Nacional has now made a shocking revelation that the Los Blancos’ manager Carlo Ancelotti blocked his club from re-signing their legendary striker. Ancelotti himself returned to Santiago Bernabeu last summer and right away steered Real to their record 14th Champions League, on top of the La Liga as well as the Spanish Super Cup. But the Italian reportedly quickly distanced himself with Ronaldo, who he had worked with at Real in his previous stint from 2013 to 2015.

Ancelotti didn’t want his Real set-up disturbed by Cristiano Ronaldo signing

Cristiano Ronaldo made a dramatic return to Manchester United last summer, after leaving Juventus. The Portuguese reclaimed his ‘No.7’ and put on some vintage displays to rack up a staggering 24 goals in 38 games in all competitions. However, 18 of his 24 goals which came in the Premier League were not enough for United to achieve a top-four finish, meaning they were going to Europa League this season thanks to a sixth-place finish behind Arsenal.

Touted as ‘Mr. Champions League’ Cristiano couldn’t take the fact that he will be missing the elite European competition and he along with his agent Jorge Mendes worked relentlessly throughout the summer to find a new club. Mendes reportedly approached both the Madrid clubs, with his preference being Real where his client had plied trade for 9 years amassing 450 goals in 438 games. With Real Madrid president Florentino Perez keen on the idea of facilitating the club’s all-time top scorer back in, Carlo Ancelotti however held out against the thought.

The Italian, according to El Nacional didn’t want the Los Blancos to bring back Ronaldo and even threatened to quit his job if the five-time Ballon d’Or winner arrived this summer. Perez ultimately had to give in to his manager’s decision, who had just won the club four trophies in the span of 12 months. The Real president conveyed the same to Mendes, who despite disappointed then approached rivals Atletico. The Los Rojiblancos too were excited to acquire the services of the player against whom they had suffered for years.

But their fans too protested sternly to oppose the incoming of the Man United forward. However, Ancelotti opting against signing his former player raised the eyebrows of many. The 63-year-old had worked with Ronaldo for two years during their time together at Real Madrid. The Portuguese reached new heights under Ancelotti, scoring 112 goals in 101 games and winning the Champions League as well as back-to-back Ballons d’Or in 2013 and ’14.

The Spanish outlet adds the reason behind Ancelotti snubbing the chance to reunite Cristiano Ronaldo was the Italian didn’t want to disturb his team set-up which he has built over the course of last season. The Los Blancos manager has really created a brilliant team with the perfect blend of youth and experience, which has been rampant this season as well. Ancelotti has the recently crowned Ballon d’Or Karim Benzema on fire to lead his attack, having racked up 50 goals in 57 games in all competitions since the start of the last season.

Real further have Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo, Eden Hazard, Marco Asensio in their attack and midfielder Fede Valverde who has newly developed attacking prowess. Ancelotti would have certainly found it difficult to fit in Ronaldo in his current system, which would have hindered the progress of the club. Meanwhile, the United forward has once again fallen out with his current boss Erik ten Hag and was axed from the travelling squad for the Chelsea game. It is now being highly speculated that Cristiano Ronaldo will be on his way out in the upcoming January transfer market.
