Champions League: Huge blow for Chelsea ahead of the PSG clash

shashi / 17 February 2015

Chelsea could be heading in to their round of 16 clash against PSG without their key man from mid field Cesc Fabregas. The Spaniard is suspected to be suffering from a heavy cold and looks sure to miss out the game on Tuesday night.

The news was broken by ESPN’s Kevin Palmer who said: “The Spaniard trained on Monday wrapped up in a variety of woolyhats and scarfs as he battled what reports suggest is a heavy cold”.

The news comes as a major blow for Jose Mourinho, who clearly admitted to the fact that it would be impossible to replace Cesc Fabregas for Chelsea. Former Arsenal skipper has made a brilliant return to the Premier League having already assisted 18 goals for Chelsea in all competitions.

One of the key reasons for Chelsea’s success this season has been the partnership between Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic. Both have struck an incredible understandig in Chelsea’s mid field and have helped Chelsea to progress further and further in all competitions.

Fabregas’s absence would call for Mourinho to ask either John Obi Mikel or Ramires to deputise for Fabregas. Ramires could be the one to get the nod especially after Mourinho praising Brazilian’s work rate and contribution to the side. Mourinho is quite aware that he can not replace the effect that Fabregas has on the Chelsea side.

Mourinho was speaking to Chelsea TV and said: “There are not many players who fill the same role as Fabregas. If you are just that type of intelligent, technical player, but you don’t have the quality to compete and win first and second balls, then to be intense is very difficult.

There are not many players like this and that is why, when we felt the chance to have Cesc Fabregas, we thought the player could give us important things but at the same time give us what the modern game needs”.

Chelsea are facing PSG side who are battling a injury crisis of their own. PSG will be without Yohan Cabaye, Marquinhos, Serge Aurier and Lucas Moura for the game against Chelsea. Perhaps soem of the playing field has been levelled with Fabregas set to miss for Chelsea.

Both sets of fans would hope that the outcome of the match is not affected due the key players missing for both the teams, but it should be decided by those who will be taking the field for this epic Champions League round of 16 clash later tonight between PSG and Chelsea.
