Chelsea have been having an implosion defensively in the Premier League, with things coming to a head in the 3-3 draw with Everton. The club has failed to keep a clean sheet time and again and have seen goal after another go in from poorly defended corners and crosses.
The players to blame are generally the midfielders and the Right back, Ivanovic, who has been abysmal this season but Chelsea seem to be preparing reinforcements in the centre back position. Of the two centre backs, Zouma has his position locked down due to his immense play over the season. The other spot has been a toss-up between Terry and Cahill as they both bring different abilities and follies to the fore. Here is what Hiddink had to say about Terry:
“I must say he looks physically fit but what also is important when you’re halfway in the season is that he is fresh also. Fresh in his mind. He’s very eager to play.
“One day, not now, the body will say: ‘Hey slow down a bit’. I don’t see any of that.”
With Cahill hitting 30 and Terry hitting 35, it is clear that there is a need for younger talent to fill in their spots when they are gone and with that in mind, Chelsea are chasing John Stones and Scott Dann.
Dann has been a mainstay for Crystal Palace this season and has been one of the most reliable defenders in the Premier League so far. The fact that he currently ears just over 60,000 pounds a week, makes him an easy target for Chelsea who can at least double his wages to convince the player of his Blue future. Chelsea will have to ward off interest from Everton as well as his current club, Crystal Palace, to secure his signature.
