Chelsea’s desperation to sign a centre-back before the transfer deadline has made them plan a shock move for Manchester United defender Phil Jones in case their pursuit of Paris St-Germain defender David Luiz fails.
Chelsea reportedly lodged a whopping £30 million bid for Luiz last night, who left Stamford Bridge in 2014.
Jones has not played since January due to injury and has been linked with several Premier League clubs. However, reports in The Daily Mail claim that Mourinho is not keen on letting the United defender join any rival.
Jones, who signed for the Red Devils in the summer of 2011 for £16.5 million from Blackburn Rovers, will look to force his way into Mourinho’s plans as he continues his injury comeback. A host of injuries has prevented him to fully establish himself at Old Trafford so far. But still Mourinho would be keen to keep him since the future of defenders Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian is looking uncertain.
Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has been desperately trying to sign a centre-back to bolster his leaky defence.Chelsea’s defence was one of the main reasons for their poor performance in last season as they conceded 53 goals. The Blues were linked with a host of big names but failed to sign a single player. They were also left frustrated in pursuit of Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly and AC Milan’s Alessia Romagnoli. Former Chelsea star David Luiz is currently on Chelsea’s radar.
Fiorentina defender Marcos Alonso, meanwhile, looks all set to join the Blues. But Conte still wants to sign another centre-back before the deadline. West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna is also linked with the West London club.
