Reports surfacing in Spain suggest that the Special One is planning to drop the aging Spaniard for a fresh and rising French talent.
According to Spanish website Fichajes, Mourinho is after a ‘swap’ deal involving Diego Costa and Antoine Griezmann. A tumultuous season and the lack of even a redeemable performance by one of his frontrunner have forced the Blues boss to search for a winning ingredient abroad. Costa came to Chelsea last season for 32 million pounds and scored 20 goals across all competitions for the London outfit, a fairly good performance. But this season has outright pathetic for the Spaniard and his team.
Chelsea’s title hopes are in shambles and its stars have done very little to turn things aroud with Costa being one of the players who was expected to drag the team out of the loserville maze. But the striker has been more focused on picking up bans, throwing tantrums and partying all night than playing. Having scored only two goals in 10 Premier League appearances this season Costa is sure the one to throw a bib and react aggressively.
Jose Mourinho arguably had given Costa a long line but now the Portuguese seems to have run out of patience and is in desperate need of some thrilling change upfront that can salvage their campaign somewhat this season. And who better than Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann.
This season in his 14 appearances in the League Griezmann has scored 7 goals and the 5 games he has played in the ChampionsLeague saw his finding the back of the net on 4 occasions. Chelsea are keen on getting Griezmann to Stamford Bridge and are ready for a swap deal that would see Costa reuniting with his former club.
Is Griezmann an answer to Chelsea’s prayers for a turnaround? This will only be clear if the deal comes through. Till then Chelsea have a crucial Champions League tie against Porto on Thursday and entering the game on the backs of a defeat against Bournemouth does not help Chelsea’s cause.
