Group A – Match 2 (June 12, 2015)

Estadio Sausalito, Viña del Mar, Chile

Mexico 0-0 Bolivia

Mexico could not break their Copa America jinx over Bolivia, for the fourth straight time. The two teams played out a boring draw, which keeps them sandwiched between Chile and Ecuador in the Group A table. The only moment of drama in the match came, when Javier Aquino was brought down by Leonel Morales inside the penalty area, but the Mexicans were refused a penalty by match – referee Enrique Caceres.

Bolivia could have taken the lead in the 1st half, with Ricardo Pedriel’s shot hitting the post and a 25-yarder from Jhasmani Campos saved by Jose Corona. Mexico started the 2nd half well, Jesús Manuel Corona, nicknamed Tecatito, came close to scoring in the 49th minute. He seemed to bring some flair to this match, but his trickery could not help the Mexicans in putting the ball past the Bolivian goalkeeper Romel Quiñónez, who had a good match. Raúl Jiménez came on for Eduardo Herrera at the hour mark. He had the best chance of the match when Tecatito Corona dribbled past the Bolivian defence on the left wing and sent in a cross which found Jiménez free, but his header went wide. Javier Aquino, who came in for veteran defender Rafael Márquez, went down in the penalty box although Leonel Morales barely seemed to make any contact. Aquino’s appeal for a penalty was promptly turned down by the referee. Matías Vuoso, who is Argentine by birth, but chose to represent Mexico, had his shot blocked towards the end of the match. The result remained nil-nil at the final whistle.

Mexico will now face Chile in their next match, before facing off against Ecuador, which will probably be the decider as to who finishes 2nd in Group A.
