Manchester United finally picked their first win in the Europa League after beating FC Sheriff 2-0 with goals from Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo. All was merry for the Red Devils as finally Ronaldo opened his scoring account for the season and David de Gea earned a deserved clean-sheet. However, it was Sancho who received massive praise from United boss Erik ten Hag.
Sancho has had a blow hot blow cold stint at Old Trafford so far after making his £75 million move from Borussia Dortmund last summer. He could only manage 5 goals and 3 assists in 38 appearances in all competitions for the Devils last season. However, with the new season and a new coach, a change in fortunes is expected for the winger who is already flourishing under Erik ten Hag.
Erik ten Hag ‘pleased’ with Sancho as he believes there’s ‘more room for improvement’
Jadon Sancho is already on his way to eclipse his tally of 8 goal contributions last season, after so far being directly involved in 3 goals in 8 games. Slowly and steadily the England international is adapting to his country’s Premier League and showing his real potential. The Europa League game against Sheriff was one such instance where he mesmerised the fans.
The 22-year-old had 2 shots on target [100%], 2 dribbles completed [100%], 4 duels won [100%] and 36 passes completed [90%] against Sheriff. A wonderful goal capped off Sancho’s perfect night, as he was further hailed by his gaffer Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman was quite “pleased” by his winger’s blistering display, but suggested there’s more to come from him given the ‘room for improvement’ he has. Ten Hag said:
“After the first 10 minutes we found our formation, we were more secure, we had some good movements on the ball in the middle of the park, we kept the ball and in right moments we split up, we make a great goal with Jadon Sancho. I’m really pleased [for Sancho]. Another goal, he’s doing well, but I think there’s much more room for improvement for him, because he has so many skills.”
Expectations were high from the former Dortmund winger after he arrived for a whopping £75 million at Old Trafford. Moreover, his numbers for the Bundesliga side; 50 goals and 64 assists in just 137 games further elevated the joy of the Red Devils’ fans. However, an underwhelming debut season disappointed both fans as well as Sancho.
But with Erik ten Hag at the wheel, Sancho seems to enjoying his time on the pitch like he did from his Dortmund days. The Dutchman needs a player like Sancho to establish his ‘high-pressing’ football and the winger is giving his manager exactly what he wants. However, he will seemingly have to do more if he wants to be in the starting eleven of Gareth Southgate’s England line-up at this year’s FIFA World Cup.
