Jose Mourinho spoke to ESPN where he revealed about his admiration for Colombian international striker Radamel Falcao who joined Chelsea this summer on loan from AS Monaco. Speaking about his new signing Mourinho said that he was a little scared when Falcao had joined rivals Manchester United last summer on loan.
Radamel Falcao at one point of time was one of the best strikers in the world. He is a brilliant goal getter and arguably the best poacher in world football during his Atletico Madrid days. In 2013 Falcao moved to AS Monaco but soon suffered a terrible leg injury which sidelined him for nearly 6 months. He missed the FIFA World Cup last summer and AS Monaco finally send him on loan.
A lot was expected from Falcao as he joined the Red Devils but he proved to be a failure their. he scored 4 goals in the entire season and was not even the regualr starter at the club. Manchester United finally released him at the end of last season. It was at this time that Mourinho encashed the opportunity and roped in the striker on loan.
Speaking about Falcao, the Chelsea boss mentioned: “When he went to Man United I have to say I was a bit scared. Because he’s a predator in the box and a guy who does score goals all the time. He did that in every club in every league, so I was convinced he was going to do that in our league, in England.”
Even though he was a proven flop at United Mourinho stressed on the fact that Falcao has been tested by the club’s medical team and he does not have any problem regarding injury. His major problem has been mental. Mourinho believes that Falcao can again become a world beater if he is given guidance and moral support.
He added: “We had a very exhaustive analysis of his condition before we made a decision. Our doctor had real work to investigate all of that. He is not, for sure, a physical problem. So if it’s not physical, we can make him score goals again.”
The Portuguese manager further said that he has seen Falcao since his FC Porto days. When Mourinho was in Portugal, Falcao was in the same league. When the manger moved to Real Madrid, Falcao went to Atletico Madrid and now when he is in charge of Chelsea Falcao came to United.
“Falcao was in my league when he was in Portugal. We moved to Spain at the same time,” Mourinho said “When I went to Real Madrid, he went to Atletico, so we spent three years in the same league. Then I came to England and he came to England too. So I know obviously this player very well.”
Radamel Falcao replaced Didier Drogba in the Chelsea squad who left after just one season at the club.
