Jose Mourinho’s season slumped a bit more on Saturday when Chelsea lost to AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League. Chelsea welcomed AFC Bournemouth to the Stamford Bridge and would have hope to take all three points from this relatively easy fixture. But the visitors had other ideas.
Bournemouth, a newly promoted club started the match at Stamford Bridge with some profound confidence. They looked to put Chelsea under pressure every chance they got. They were solid at the back and also hurt Chelsea on the counters. The home team held on as they missed some glorious chances and paid for them when Glen Murray scored one past Courtois to give the visitors all three points.
This loss saw Mourinho’s side stay at the 15th place in the table with 15 points on the board. They will face league leaders Leicester City who are 17 points ahead at the moment. The more surprising stat is that the London club is just 3 points above the relegation zone.
Though relegation is too far-fetched for a squad as talented as Chelsea, they will have to sweat it out to reach the top half of the table at the end of the season. The manager who had nothing to say to the press after previous matches gave a statement that has seen the fans of the club go angry.
After the loss against the newly promoted side, Jose Mourinho has come out and said that it will be hard for his team to reach previous heights. He said that he was still confident about his club and that the target for the team at the end of the season was to finish in the top four.
However, he also added that after this defeat to the Cherries, the realistic target for the team would be to finish in the top 6 of the Premier League. The club is just 8 points away from 6th placed West Ham United and vast changes in the fortune of the club can actually help them reach their target of top 6.
This statement has made fans of the club go crazy over social media who have now started to doubt where the club’s season is going. Many fans have made their opinion heard and wanted their manager to be sacked and pushed out of the club. It will not be easy for the owners of the club to get a manager better than Mourinho in the middle of the season, meaning Jose still has a third of the season to save his and the club’s future.
To save the club, Mourinho will have to change a lot of things as they have failed to impress all over the field. They have looked shaky in defense and also lack any spark in attack. Though Mourinho has stated that they will not make too many purchases this January, he will have to change something drastically to reach his target.
The fixtures do not get easy for Chelsea either with a trip to Leicester City coming up next weekend. Leicester have a great chance to put more pressure on the already down Chelsea squad. The squad will have to work hard and make things happen quickly to revive their season.
