Chelsea’s dismal start to the season continued in its European campaign as they once again fell prey to the Portugal Club Porto in a group stage encounter. Chelsea equalized but was not able to keep the hosts at bay as Maicon scored the winner and gave Porto all three points. Chelsea has a lot of work to do this season if they want to be as successful as in the last.

Here are the Player Ratings for the Champions League match between the two teams.

FC Porto:

Iker Casillas (3): A mixed performance from the Spaniard. Should have done better against Willian’s free kick but made some smart saves when called upon.

Maxi Pereira (3.5): Provided natural width down the right flank in attack for the home team. Was also solid in defense giving the likes of Willian no time on the ball.

Maicon (3): Scored the winner and was solid at the other end against Costa. But was lucky not to concede a penalty for a challenge on Hazard.

Ivan Marcano (3): Shaky at times at the back like his partner. But was generally a solid performance as he never allowed Chelsea to dictate the game.

Bruno Martins Indi (3): Provided the required stability at the back and kept Pedro away from his goal. Could not provide enough width in the attacking front.

Danilo Pereira (3.5): Almost scored with a header that hit the post. Was impressive in breaking up play just in front of the back four for the home team.

Ruben Neves (4): Assisted the winner of the game from the corner and was also solid in midfield winning almost every loose ball.

Gilbert Imbula (3.5): Acted as the link between the defense and the attack with his pace and skill through the middle. The Chelsea players looked clueless against his trickery.

Andre (3): Scored the first goal for the home team but was not really bright on the ball for most of the match.

Vincent Aboubakar (3.5): Did exactly what Chelsea needed as he held the ball up front to release the pressure off his defenders. His smart run-ins behind the Chelsea defense often caused problems.

Yacine Brahimi (4): A man of the match performance from the forward as he never gave the Chelsea defense a chance to get close to him. He troubled them all night with his touch and pace and linked well with all the players in a Porto dress.

Evandro (3)

Miguel Layun (3)

Dani Osvaldo (3)

Asmir Begovic (2.5): Should have done better against both the goals scored by the home team. But was generally good with his handling.

Branislav Ivanovic (0): Given the armband on the night, the wing back was responsible for both the goals. He was molested down the flank as he never came close to keeping his flank secure. Another poor performance. These stats justify why we give Ivanovic a Zero – 10 misplaced passes, 10 tackles attempted, 1 tackle won, 0 aerial duels won, 0 crosses completed

Kurt Zouma (2.5): Was solid in defense but rarely set up any attacks from the back. Should work on his distribution.

Gary Cahill (2.5): Should have marked Maicon for the winning goal. Was also troubled by the pace of the Porto forwards time and time again.

Cesar Azpilicueta (3): The pick of the defenders on the night as he kept Andre Andre on his toes. Did not provide much in attack when needed.

Ramires (2.5): The Brazilian won the free kick for Chelsea that was converted but often lost out in the middle field battle against Porto.

Jon Obi Mikel (2): Another midfielder who failed to control the game in the middle. The Porto players were rarely troubled by his presence.

Pedro (1.5): Worked hard all night but lacked the incision that was needed to break the Porto defense, also missed an easy goal.

Cesc Fabregas (2.5): Was on his bike all night putting pressure on the Porto midfield but was rarely able to provide the killer pass he is known for.

Willian (3.5): Scored the only goal for the visitors and gave his everything till the last minute.

Diego Costa (3): An eventful first half for Costa as he did pretty well to hold up the ball up ahead. Also showed some silky feet to get past defenders but lacked a bit of support from his teammates.

Eden Hazard (2.5)

N Matic (2.5)

Kenedy (2.5)
