Finally: Arsenal Close To Extending Contracts Of Two First Team Players This Month!

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will not be too displeased with his team’s performances recently but he will know that they will have to work harder if they are to have even a shot at the Premier League title this season.

The recent draw against Bournemouth has taken them further from the summit and Wenger has a few things going on in his mind this January transfer window.

He will have an eye on potential transfer target who could be ready to make a move to the club but at the same time, he will also have to think hard about the situation of the players currently in the squad.

Two such players, whose contract situation at the club is weak is midfielder Santi Cazorla and defender Per Mertesacker.

The Spanish midfielder started the season in fine form for the Gunners, helping them to some important victories, but he picked up an ankle injury which will keep him out of the game at least until the end of the next month.

He has more than 150 appearances for the side so far in his career and is an integral player in the squad.

The German defender Per Mertesacker was expected to be the first choice pairing with Laurent Koscielny this season but the knee injury he picked up in pre-season saw Wenger spend on Shkodran Mustafi to cover for him.

He is the current captain of the club this season but is yet to make an appearance for the Gunners this season.

Both players are no close to getting back to action and are in the final few months of their contract with the club.

But Arsene Wenger, who is usually not happy spending big money in the market, is now ready to extend the contract of both the players.

Speaking to the media recently, Wenger revealed that it was time for him to start negotiating contracts and revealed that it was important for the squad to have a mixture of experience and youth that can take them places.

He said, “We have an option on both of them and I think we will take it. The priority first is as football players but as well for their mental guidance.”

“We need to have a balance between youth and experience and they are important in that as well,” he added.

Cazorla, 29 and Mertesacker, 32, are both settled at the club and have no real reason to reject a new offer but it is to be seen when they will put pen to paper.

Do you think Wenger is right in extending the contracts of the experienced duo this January?
