Former Manchester City full-back Micah Richards has had his say on who among Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe is a better player. The two attackers have given birth to a rivalry which was once shared, and is still being shared by ear-defying players Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Moreover, with Haaland making a much awaited switch this summer, joining Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund, the debate between him and Mbappe who plies his trade for French giants PSG has taken a new turn.
Both Haaland and Mbappe, at 22 and 23 respectively have already shown the world they are ready to dominate the next decade as they have accumulated a whopping 371 goals and 147 assists in just 475 games in their senior career between them. And with the Messi-Ronaldo rivalry at its twilight, the two youngsters have given the world a new one. Both were in action during the Champions League this mid-week, as pro-turned-pundit Richards in his conversation with former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher gave his verdict on the best player between the two.
Richards’ pick between Erling Haaland-Kylian Mbappe would certainly disappoint City fans
Micah Richards plied his trade for Manchester City for 8 years, from 2006 to 2014, making 246 appearances for the club in all competitions. He helped the club to two Premier League titles as well as a FA Cup and a League Cup during his time, making him one of the club’s most iconic players. However, he took retirement from the game at just 3-years-old and has since taken up punditry.
The City man now assessed a better player among Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, however without having a soft-corner for the Norwegian who plays for his former side. The 34-year-old pundit picked Mbappe as a better player over Haaland, also justifying his verdict by labelling the Frenchman an ‘all-round’ player. In his conversation with Carragher on CBS Sports Golazo, on being asked to choose between the two young players, Richards said:
“It doesn’t matter, [Kylian] Mbappe is the best young player around.”
Carragher quickly quizzed the former City full-back:
“Better than [Erling] Haaland?”
To which Richards replied:
“Remember, we said this, the best all-round game.”
The former Liverpool snapped back at the City fans who were watching the two panelists argue:
“Did you hear this Man City fans? Micah Richards thinks Mbappe is better than Haaland.”
Richards hilariously responded:
“Don’t listen to Jamie, he’s trying to cause. What’s happening here!”
The debate of Haaland-Mbappe could go on forever as the two are bound to take the center stage in years to come. However, a former City man siding with the PSG superstar over Haaland would have certainly left a distaste among the English club’s fans. Nonetheless, the duo are firing on all cylinder this season, with the Norwegian racking up 22 goals in just 16 games, and Mbappe netting 16 in as many appearances in all competitions.
Both are however on a mission to steer their respective sides to a maiden Champions League triumph, which would also be a first for the duo. While Haaland was unable to inspire City to a win over his former side Borussia Dortmund despite smashing 5 goals in 4 Champion League games so far, Mbappe along with Lionel Messi and Neymar wrecked a havoc against Maccabi Haifa, scoring 2 goals and providing 2 assists in a 7-2 rout.
