Italian Serie A giants AS Roma have decided to terminate former Chelsea and Arsenal star Ashley Cole’s contract with the club just after one season. Ashley Cole had left Chelsea last season after Jose Mourinho refused to give him a new contract at the club. The English defender had signed a two-year deal with AS Roma which would have kept him at the club untill 2016. But at the present circumstances it is being reported that AS Roma is not happy with the player’s performance and they have decided to release the player before the completion of the contract.
Ashley Cole left the club last season after his contract expired with Chelsea. After 8 long seasons at Stamford Bridge, the English international became out of favour under Jose Mourinho. In 2013/14 season Jose Mourinho converted Cesar Azpilicueta into a left-back and the Spaniard did a brilliant job. This forced Cole to get relegated to the reserve bench and he got hardly any playing time. Mourinho refused to extend his Chelsea stay last summer which forced Cole to move to Italy.
The 34-year-old defender was not very convincing either at AS Roma as he only made 11 Serie A appearances last season and had rarely featured in the club’s pre-season games under coach Rudi Garcia this time.
Ashley Cole was not included in the squad for Roma’s 6-4 friendly win over Sevilla on Friday night which saw Manchester City loanee Edin Dzeko score two goals.
The defender was product of Arsenal’s youth setup and played for the Gunners for 8 seasons before leaving for Chelsea in 2006. Cole has won 107 international caps as left-back for the English football team.
It will be interesting to see if the former English star makes a comeback to the Premier League this season.
