Fred Losing Weight At A Rate Of 3 Kilos Per Game At The Ongoing FIFA World Cup Reveals Brazil’s Fitness Team

Fred is literally working quite hard to realise his and Brazil’s dream and objective to lift the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The Manchester United midfielder has started one game and has made one appearance off the bench at the tournament so far, but his impact has been much bigger than that. In a surprise decision, Fred, a regular starter for the Selecaos alongside Casemiro, was dropped by Tite for the opener against Serbia, in favour of Lucas Paqueta who was made to play in makeshift role.

However, after Neymar’s ankle injury in that game, which will reportedly keep him out for at least the group stage campaign, Tite promoted Paqueta to his natural role, and introduced Fred in the starting eleven in the second game against Switzerland. The 29-year-old continued his solid form for Brazil and dominated the middle of the park with Casemiro. But there could be an another dimension to Fred’s on-field displays, as the team’s fitness coaches have revealed a massive drop in the weight of the midfielder.

Fred has often come under the scanner for his dismal performances for Manchester United, ever since his £51 million move from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018. On the other hand, he has always stepped up for Brazil, delivering some brilliant performances, including the ones at their 2019 Copa America triumph. And according to the physios and fitness coaches of the national set-up, Fred is the player who has been drilling relentlessly, losing his weight rapidly in the heat of Qatar. Brazil physio Guilherme Passos revealed:

“He has an absurd work rate, very high. We had a match in the Copa America where he covered 12km. He’s always our top one, top two in volume, in distance covered. In work rate, which means that he is all the time running through the field at high speed and moderate speed.”

Whereas Brazil fitness coach Fabio Mahseradjian added:

“Fred is a very mobile and typically endurance athlete. He’s not as fast as [Gabriel] Martinelli or Rodrygo. He’s not a strength athlete like Richarlison. They are individual characteristics of others, but he has his own, which is very mobile and of high resistance.

Clearly, Fred is putting extra efforts to ensure he remains in a robust shape for the ongoing tournament. Despite being 29, this could well be his last shot at glory with the national team, given the enormous amount of talent coming out of the country would even allow him to remain with the set-up until the next World Cup. But his grueling workout is commendable considering the conditions they are playing in, with temperatures of over 30C, and humidity also at a punishing 60 per cent.

However, the Brazil physios too are at work, and are planning light work for the midfielder. Fred’s intensity in both training and during the matches is a worry for the physios who fear he may overload his system in the resolution of pushing his limits. The fitness team is working close with Fred to reduce his over-workout and keep him fresh for the next game. By the looks of it, Brazil are determined to go as far as they can in this tournament, and will certainly need players like Fred in their best shape.
