Frenkie de Jong broke Manchester United fans’ heart in the summer after rejecting a move to the club from Barcelona. And now, his girlfriend Mikky Kiemeney has trolled the Red Devils supporters with an epic reply. United tried all summer long to sign De Jong from Barca, who were ready to sell the midfielder to ease the load off their wage bill which could have subsequently helped them with buying more players.
The Holland international held out on his desire to continue at his ‘dream club’ and was reluctant to reunited with former manager Erik ten Hag at United. Fast forward six months, Frenkie de Jong is now a key part of Xavi’s team which is still fighting for three trophies having already won one in the Spanish Super Cup. However, the United fans seem to have not lost any hope on De Jong to United and once again quizzed Kiemeney over it.

Frenkie de Jong was wanted by the Red Devils in the summer of 2022 after a protracted transfer drama that saw multiple attempts made by the Old Trafford outfit to entice the Netherlands midfielder away from Camp Nou. Since then, rumours have abounded surrounding purported interest in the Dutchman. Ten Hag had prioritised signing a new holding midfielder at United and had made his former protégé his number one target.
Barcelona too were open to offload him since that could have relaxed them a bit from their financial crisis. The two clubs even reached an agreement for the transfer of the 25-year-old for a package in the excess of £75m. However, United couldn’t convince him till the end and as a result, gave up on the pursuit. Meanwhile, during an ‘Ask me Anything’ on Instagram, De Jong’s girlfriend was posed with the question over his links to United.
Kiemeney smartly implied that the only time Frenkie de Jong will be at Old Trafford will be for the second leg of Barcelona’s Europa League quarterfinal play-off match against the Red Devis on 2 February 2023. To the United fans who are still hoping that a player who has enjoyed a remarkable 2022–23 season with the Catalans will eventually sign with the Premier League powerhouse, Kiemeney felt compelled to respond in jest.
De Jong is flourishing for Xavi’s side after being asked to fill one of two holding midfielder’s role in a new-look system for the La Liga leaders. In a backtrack of their earlier decision, it seems highly unlikely that Barcelona will consider offers for him any time soon after being receptive to them last summer. The former Ajax midfielder has made 25 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions since the summer saga, starting 19 of it.
On the other hand, United too have moved on from Frenkie, as they then quickly swooped in for Real Madrid’s Casemiro as the Barca superstar’s alternative. While initially they faced flak for splashing £70m on a 30-year-old Casemiro when talks of a young revolution were being heard at Old Trafford, the fans are now singings songs of praises of the Brazilian who has transformed the club and has helped them sit third in the Premier League and still competing for every other trophy.
