According to reports in Sports Bild, Liverpool wanted to sign Hoffenheim’s central defender Niklas Sule during the summer transfer window. The Merseyside club had a busy transfer window as their boss Jurgen Klopp was trying to bolster his squad. After being linked with several defenders, the Reds signed Estonia captain Ragnar Klavan and former Schalke man Joel Matip as new central defenders.
The report claimed that the German tactician was interested in signing Sule. However, the 21-year old rejected the offer in favour of developing at the club.
“I need my familiar environment and to be constantly playing at my level even further,” he told Sports Bild.
Sule, who also garnered interest from Borussia Dortmund, Roma, Napoli and AC Milan, want to develop more under the tutelage of Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann, who has played a large part in the defender’s career.
Meanwhile, Liverpool will be looking to bolster their defence as quickly as possible. They have already conceded six goals in their opening three Premier League games, picking up four points in the process. Left-back Alberto Moreno is looking like the weak link in the team and Klopp has been compelled to play James Milner as a makeshift left-back.
Sule, who played for Germany’s Olympic football team, making six appearances as his country picked up a silver medal in Rio de Janeiro, would have surely been a valuable addition to the team.
