Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso has dropped a surprising hint that he would be interested in ‘see what life is like at Arsenal’ when he revealed his close friendship with Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta, according to a report from Daily Star.
Alonso admitted that he grew up as an Arsenal fan in his hometown San Sebastian, where the Spaniard first met Arteta, before he decided to join Real Sociedad and Arteta left for Barcelona.
But both the Spaniards, now in their mid-30s, faced each other several times over the years in Premier League when Alonso was playing for Liverpool and Arteta for Everton, though never played together for club or country.
Alonso, who in December penned a new long-term contract extension with Bayern Munich, has revealed that he is still in touch with his old friend at the Emirates, and has also admitted that he often thinks about playing alongside him in north London.
“I follow him very closely because we have kept in touch forever, from when he move from Everton to Arsenal,” Alonso told in an interview with Arsenal’s official YouTube channel.
“I want to know how it works there in Arsenal, and he’s enjoying it so far.”
Back in November, there were reports that Xabi Alonso might return to Anfield as his former club Liverpool still looks for experience and class in midfield. The veteran Bassmaster is still showing his class for Bayern Munich. From midfield to centre back, Alonso has excelled in every position he played for the Bavarians, except a short period of poor form during Bayern’s struggles towards the end of the last term. The former Spanish midfielder’s contract is set to expire at the end of this season and last September it was suggested that he was open to a move in MLS or China. Alonso, however, ruled out the possibility of Anfield return in near future.
