Sporting Lisbon have announced the signing of Indonesian wonderkid Martunis, who famously survived the disastrous December 2004 giant tsunami that struck the northern Indonesia.

The incident took place when Martunis was just 8, after he had returned home playing football with friends. The disaster took a toll of around 170,000 people in his native Aceh, which despairingly also swept away the kids’ mother and both his sister. Fate favored Martunis, as he held onto a sofa that was floating away.

MIRACLE: Martunis survived the tsunami that swept away masses

He survived the next 18 days on puddle of water and dried noodles, before he was found on the brink of death by a British journalist due to lack of food and water.

Martunis was then wearing a Portuguese jersey, a Rui Costa replica. This subsequently attracted media attention and help from Portugal, with the Portuguese Federation offering him €40000 for a new home.

A decade since then, Martunis has beaten all odds to sign a contract with Portugal giants Sporting Clube de Portugal. And the Indonesian wants to play with his idol Ronaldo and the Seleção.

Then Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo had flown immediately to meet the tsunami struck country and Martunis. A product for the Leões, Ronaldo’s aid helped the teenager to finish high school.

CHILDHOOD HERO: Martunis idolized Ronaldo, who aided his education.

The Martunis, 17-year-old will join the famed Sporting academy and represent the U19 squad, following the footsteps of his hero Ronaldo.
