Footballer Peter Biaksangzuala, a midfielder at Bethlehem Vengthlang FC tragically died after his somersault goal celebration went horribly wrong during a match last week.

The 23-year-old had scored in the 62nd minute of the game and went on to perform a somersault. But the attempted trick went wrong and the player fell awkwardly on his head and neck.

He was immediately rushed to a hospital nearby where scans showed that he had damaged his spinal cord. He spent five days in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) before succumbing to his injuries.

A source said he was trying to imitate Germany legend Miroslav Klose’s goal celebration when he fell.

Lalnghinglova Hmar, the Mizoram Football Association’s (MFA) secretary, said: “This is indeed very shocking for all of us.”

“Aizawl FC has deeply mourned the death of a promising player. Our condolences go to Bethlehem Vengthlang FC as well even as we pray for his family,” Aizawl FC said in statement released on their Facebook page.
