Inter Milan tried to steal Marcos Alonso from Barcelona who have already agreed a deal for the left-back, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. The Chelsea player is all set to leave Stamford Bridge as he wants to return to his homeland of Spain. Barcelona were the first ones to circle around the 31-year-old and even agreed personal terms with him in April earlier this year.
Chelsea have beefed up the left-back position after the signing of Marc Cucurella from Brighton for a whopping fee of £58 million. They already have Ben Chilwell in the ranks to compete on the left flank which has further pushed Alonso towards an exit. Inter however had other plans as they asked Chelsea for the signing of the Spaniard in a last-minute swoop in.
Alonso says ‘No’ to Inter Milan as he waits for Barcelona
Barcelona have been proactive this summer window after the return of their former president Joan Laporta. The Catalans have since welcomed the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen and Frank Kessie. However, club Xavi wants more additions as he eyes a deputy to left-back Jordi Alba.
The club quickly identified Marcos Alonso as the man to provide stern competition to Alba, who was available as well. They then agreed on personal terms with Alonso on a three-year deal back in April as confirmed by Romano. He has now set his eyes on the move and even reportedly rejected a last gasp attempt from the Blues to change his mind.
He now has rejected a late approach from the Nerazzurris as he is waiting on for Barcelona to table a formal offer in front of Chelsea. Though the Spanish giants have closed the agreement on the player’s side, they are yet to present a bid to his current employers. Marcos Alonso is in the last year of his current deal at Stamford Bridge and the Blues want to cash in on him. Earlier reports revealed that they are set to demand a fee of around €20 million for their 2016 recruit.
On the other hand, Inter Milan are reportedly set to lose Robin Gosens to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen and were weighing up Alonso’s signing as his replacement. Fabrizio Romano reported: “Behind the scenes. Inter approached Marcos Alonso agents on Tuesday to explore a potential move in case of Gosens departure. The answer was very clear: he’s waiting for Barcelona, no way. Alonso agreed personal terms in April on 3 year total deal — it’s only Barca.”
Gosens operated on the left side of Inter’s midfield, a position where Alonso can ply his trade too. Moreover, the Chelsea left-back has an experience of the Serie A since he spent over two years at Fiorentina making 85 appearances, scoring 5 goals and providing 7 assists.
He is yet to feature this season for Chelsea, as manager Thomas Tuchel explained: “He asked to leave and we agreed to his wish. That is why it would not have made sense to put him on the pitch”. Alonso has enjoyed his six year stint at Stamford Bridge, having featured over 200 times while netting 29 goals and collecting 23 assists. He has also lifted six trophies which include a Premier League and a Champions League title.
