Wayne Rooney will be playing as a forward next season and surely he will be facing a tough competition from the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, and especially Zlatan Ibrahimovic to lead the attack for Manchester United.
A few hours ago Jose Mourinho confirmed in his first press conference at Manchester United that Rooney won’t be playing in the midfield and he will not try to be the player Louis Van Gaal wanted him to be, by playing in a deep position.
On the other hand, England manager Roy Hodgson followed Louis Van Gaal’s “Philosophy” blindly and played Rooney in the midfield in all the Euro 2016 games.
But the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss ensure that he will bring back his goal scoring performances again!
Mourinho said: “In football, there are many jobs on the field. I think the most difficult to find is a man to put the ball in the goal.
“And I know players change over the years. Their qualities and characteristics change, it is normal that a player at his age changes.
“But one thing never changes and that is the natural appetite to score.
“Maybe he isn’t a striker or a nine but, with me, he will never be a six or playing 50 metres from goal.
“Yes his passing is amazing but so is mine without pressure.
“To be there to score is the most difficult thing to do. So he will be a nine or a 10 or a 9.5 but not a six or an eight.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who joined on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain will be the first choice striker for Jose Mourinho next season. The Swede striker’s age will be a problem, thinks the Man United boss as the player used to keep the Uruguayan talisman Edinson Cavani out of PSG’s line-up by his back to back astonishing performances at the Ligue 1 club.
So, for now, it looks like Rooney will involve in a wide role to support the former Barcelona and AC Milan striker.
Although Man United’s rising academy star Marcus Rashford got only a few minutes for the Three Lions in Euro 2016, still he would provide Wayne Rooney a tough competition if the 30-year-old is fielded as an Attacking midfielder or as a winger.
On the other hand France starlet Martial would be another competition to Rooney if he is to operate out wide.
