Jurgen Klopp has made it clear to the Liverpool board that he wants them to do their absolute best to sign Joel Matip, the impressive young Schalke defender during the upcoming window. Matip has been on the radar for all leading teams in Europe including Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Inter Milan.

Matip is a Cameroonian international and is a fixture in their squad at the tender age of 24. He is also one of the more impressive defenders in the league while being a definite starter for Schalke. He can play in the defensive midfield as well as in a full back position with a high mobility and proactive side to his game.

He was courted by Newcastle over the summer with a mooted 10 million offer but nothing came to fruition for the centre back. Meanwhile, Liverpool also have entered the race for the talented defender over the winter window.

Most importantly, the player is out of contract in the summer and if any competition in his services is ignited, it will almost surely be to acquire him over the summer. Liverpool, with Klopp certainly have the greater appeal and hence are now favourites to land him.

Also of note is the expiration of Kolo Toure’s contract in the next summer and Liverpool clearly have a need now to get another backup, with such a classy performer leaving soon for free, it might be a no brainer for Rush and co.

Another player Klopp is interested in is Leroy Sane from the same team who at the age of 19 is one of the most exciting prospects from the Bundesliga. He has already made his debut for the German National team against the French on the ill-fated day of the terrorist attacks in Paris.
