Liverpool 4-3 Borussia Dortmund: Player ratings

It was a night to remember for everyone inside Anfield as Liverpool came back from 2 goals down twice in the second half to register a remarkable victory to dump Jurgen Klopp’s ex-team Borussia Dortmund out of the Europa League on Thursday. Goals from Origi, Coutinho, Sakho and Lovren saw off the visitors even as Aubameyang, Reus and Mkhitaryan found the net for the Tuchel’s side.

It was a night full of great performances at the biggest stage by players from both the teams and here are the player ratings from this game:

Liverpool:

Simon Mignolet (3):

Made a number of crucial saves to keep his side in the hunt all throughout the night in a solid performance.

N Clyne (3):

Lost his position for Reus’ goal but was generally a solid presence at both ends of the field.

D Lovren (4):

Though couldn’t cope with the pace of Dortmund’s attack, came back with a strong display in the second half and also scored the winner in the dying minutes to cap off a brilliant game.

M Sakho (3):

Played the Dortmund players onside for all three goals but also stood tall all night and scored his first goal of the season at an important time.

A Moreno (3):

Was caught out of position plenty of times but more often than not made up for it in a decent display from the Spaniard.

E Can (3.5):

Was careless in possession at times but did exceptionally well to break up play in the midfield and also assisted Liverpool’s first goal on the night.

J Milner (3):

Struggled to come to grips with a holding midfield role as he was all over the place in the first half but came back strongly to pick up two assists and help his team over the line.

A Lallana (3):

Was hardly seen in the first half apart from his miskick in the penalty box but played on with a disciplined effort on the night.

R Firmino (3):

Coming back from injury, Firmino was not at his best but showed glimpses of what he can do at times with some marauding runs forward.

P Coutinho (3.5):

Was a constant threat all night for Dortmund as he thumped one home from the edge of the box to keep the Reds in the hunt in the second half.

D Origi (4):

Continued his excellent work in recent times as he was full of energy on the night as he opened the scoring and picked up an assist for Coutinho’s goal.

Subs:

D Sturridge (3)

J Allen (3.5)

Lucas (3)

Borussia Dortmund:

R Weidenfeller (3):

Conceded 4 goals on the night and was generally not as sound as his team wanted him to be all game.

L Piszczek (3.5):

Was superb going forward in attack but was often caught out by the likes of Coutinho as he lacked defensive discipline.

M Hummels (3):

Made some important interceptions and played Rues through with a sublime assist but was not solid enough at the back.

M Schmelzer (3):

Was full of energy on the night as he looked to make the most of the gaps in the Liverpool defense but did not do enough inside his own half to keep Liverpool away from harms reach.

S Papastathopoulous (3.5):

Showed great strength inside his penalty area but failed to deal with the movement of the Liverpool players in the second half.

G Castro (3):

Was intelligent with his passing as he kept the ball moving in the mid-field helping Dortmund calm the proceedings.

J Weigl (2.5):

Was caught out many times on the night and also failed to convert defense into an attack on a struggling night.

H Mkhitaryan (3):

Scored the opened inside 5 minutes and also linked up well with his players in a decent game for the midfielder.

S Kagawa (3):

Started the game brightly but slowly faded away as Liverpool started to dominate the proceedings.

M Reus (3.5):

Scored one and assisted another on the night as the German international was his usual self-toying with the Liverpool defense with ease.

P Aubameyang (2.5):

Missed a couple of glorious chances in the first half to put the game to bed and also provided very little in the second half when things started to turn around.

Subs:

M Ginter (2)

A Ramos (2)

I Gundogan (3)
