Jurgen Klopp has already made it clear that he will make a number of changes to the Liverpool squad he inherited from Brendan Rodgers after the end of this season.
The Merseyside club have already completed transfers for Marko Grujic and Joel Matip for the next season but the business at Anfield has only just begun.
Several rumors in the past linked Liverpool with Borussia Monchengladbach skipper Granit Xhaka with a move to the Premier League this summer.
And it has now emerged that Liverpool are leading the race for the defensive mid-fielder who has been in impressive form this season.
Lucas Leiva, Joe Allen and Emre Can who have taken up that defensive mid-field role in Liverpool have been erratic and times and Klopp is looking at options to strengthen that particular area in the squad.
It is also understood that the German manager is a big fan of the 23-year old from his time at Borussia Dortmund and is understood to be keen on brining him to Anfield this summer.
The Swiss international also recently admitted that it was his childhood dream to play in the Premier League and this has put a number of clubs including Manchester United and Arsenal on alert this summer.
The likes of Bayern Munich are also tracking the 23-year old’s progress which shows his potential making him a value purchase for Liverpool.
And according to German newspaper Bild, the Reds are leading the chase for the mid-fielder and are readying a bid for him in the summer.
However, the 23-year old has been in solid form this season and has helped his side win a number of points and it will be interesting to see if Monchengladbach will be willing to part ways with their skipper.
This will see the price tag go up to £30 million making Liverpool think twice before splashing the cash.
Xhaka is surely the kind of a player that will lift the spirits of the whole squad and will help Liverpool increase their mettle in the mid-field but whether they will meet the asking price is something to ponder over till the deal is done.
